3x faster than the TZ570! SonicWall introduces new Gen. 8 Firewall

May 1, 2025 - At the end of 2024, we got a preview of the capabilities of the SonicWall Gen. 8 firewall with the TZ80. Compared to that firewall, which was developed for the entry-level segment, SonicWall is targeting the mid-market with the NSa 2800 and NSa 3800. The current Gen. 7 firewalls for these environments are the NSa 2700 and NSa 3700. And as the title already hints; great progress has been made once again over previous generations!

From individual solutions to all-in-one

The biggest difference between Gen. 7 and Gen. 8 is that with Gen. 8, SonicWall is moving toward an all-in-one solution, consisting of leading firewalls, Cloud-Based ZTNA, co-managed NOC and SOC services, and cybersecurity guarantees. Currently, these are all separate or non-existent solutions. The 6 tools within Gen. 8 are.

The firewall for schools, hospitals, and large offices

You benefit from more than just a better SonicWall bundle. Individual specifications of the NSa 2800 and NSa 3800 are also better on virtually every front. Below, we have set out some key specifications alongside the NSa 2700 and NSa 3700. For example, we can see that maximum connections per second have quadrupled (22,000 vs. 90,000) and speeds have more than doubled (5.5 Gbps vs. 12 Gbps). All details can be found in the datasheet.

Just like the NSa 2800 and the NSa 3800, you can deploy the new firewall in 2 modes: Internet Edge Deployment and Medium and Distributed Enterprises.

• Internet Edge Deployment: This is the standard method for deploying the Gen. 8 NSa firewall. As the name suggests, the firewall is located at the Edge, allowing it to perfectly intercept incoming malicious traffic, including encrypted traffic.
• Medium and Distributed Enterprises: This mode is perfect for organizations with multiple locations, as there is no need for backhaul via the head office. This is possible thanks to support for SD-WAN and the option for centralized management. In this mode, it is also possible to intercept encrypted traffic.
