The pros and cons of Wi-Fi calling explained

Home/Store/News/The pros and cons of Wi-Fi calling explained

January 29, 2026 – Since 2016, Wi-Fi Calling, also known as WLAN Call, has become an indispensable part of the Netherlands. But what is Wi-Fi Calling? Wi-Fi Calling is a technology that makes it possible to make calls via a Wi-Fi network instead of the mobile network or GSM. Today, Wi-Fi Calling can also be seamlessly deployed alongside Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PTToC) from TELOX. We explain when it is best to choose Wi-Fi Calling and what you need to pay attention to.

Why make calls via Wi-Fi?

  • Better coverage in locations without LTE: in areas where mobile signals are weak, such as basements, warehouses, or buildings with thick walls, this makes a huge difference.
  • Clear call quality: in environments with only 3G or 4G, Wi-Fi is more stable, resulting in less static and interruption.
  • No extra costs: Wi-Fi Calling works via your existing Wi-Fi network, whereas you (often) need an additional data bundle for LTE.
  • Convenient abroad: Wi-Fi works on any network without additional costs. LTE can cost more abroad due to roaming.

Wi-Fi Calling vs. Voice over LTE

Still, calling via Wi-Fi is not always perfect. Many people ask themselves: what are the disadvantages of calling via Wi-Fi? One disadvantage is that you depend on a stable Wi-Fi network; which is often not present in an outdoor or industrial environment due to large spaces and many obstacles. For these reasons, Wi-Fi Calling generally remains a favorable solution only for stationary calling, in other words, in a single location. Think of a helpdesk, office job, or reception desk.

What can TELOX do for you?

Fortunately, you don't have to choose for other environments. With Push-to-Talk over Cellular from TELOX, you can make calls via both Wi-Fi and LTE – on a single device! TELOX switches seamlessly to the best available connection. In 9 out of 10 cases, that is LTE, but if you have to go into a basement where only Wi-Fi is available*, the device automatically switches to this network. Ideal for organizations in security, logistics, industry, emergency services, and more.

Park Inclusive shows that this works well in practice. This organization picks up and drops off visitors at Schiphol Airport. During these operations, communication often takes place on-the-move over distances of 10 km. With LTE, this is no problem at all. A central dispatch can also monitor who is where thanks to GPS support in the TELOX devices. Check out the TELOX website for more information on this use case.

What is the best choice for your organization?

When you only make calls from a fixed location, such as a desk, Wi-Fi is the best choice. For larger environments or areas with poor mobile coverage, it is best to use Push-to-Talk over Cellular from TELOX, because these devices support both Wi-Fi Calling and Voice over LTE.
