As of the beginning of April, Alcadis is a distributor of Nokia's Optical LAN

April 3, 2025 – Nokia's Optical Fiber is the perfect alternative to traditional copper CAT cables in modern networks. The (nearly) unlimited capacity and speeds that Optical Fiber supports seamlessly align with the technologies of the future, such as Wi-Fi 7 and 5G. As of April 2025, this revolutionary cable solution from Nokia is available in the Benelux for Alcadis partners.

What are the benefits of Optical Fiber?

“More than 700 enterprises, including hotels, warehouses, hospitals, campuses, and airports, are already using Optical LAN from Nokia worldwide,” says Ana Pesovic, Marketing Director at Nokia. “Our experience with Optical LAN is that it reduces energy consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional LAN and lowers TCO by 50%.”

Such a large reduction is possible partly because far fewer switches and distribution cabinets are needed in an Optical LAN network. Optical LAN is capable of covering distances of up to 20 km without intermediate devices. For comparison, that is 200 times as far as a CAT cable. An additional advantage is that Optical LAN infrastructures are much less complex to install. For example, a single hotel room can be equipped with Optical LAN in 30 minutes.

Who is Optical Fiber suitable for?

For the Benelux, Bart van Vliet, Pre-Sales Account Manager at Alcadis, sees particular opportunities in Manufacturing and Logistics. “A recurring challenge in these markets is that locations are very large and there is little (suitable) space for cables and switches due to obstacles like extreme temperatures. Optical LAN makes it possible to create a fully comprehensive network with far fewer requirements.”

RUCKUS is already actively deploying Nokia's Optical Fiber solution in other countries. Tim Dyer, VP Global Service Provider Sales at RUCKUS, says: “We are seeing a huge increase in demand for Wi-Fi 7 in combination with Optical LAN from ISPs and MSPs. Hotels and healthcare institutions are also showing interest.”

“There is a very large demand for Optical Fiber, which we can respond to well in collaboration with Nokia. We are currently already rolling out in hundreds of locations.”
