PON-based OOBM vs. Ethernet-based OOBM: Why more and more organizations are choosing PON in their data centers

Home/Store/News/PON-based OOBM vs. Ethernet-based OOBM: Why more and more organizations are choosing PON in their data centers

June 25, 2026 - There is a major development underway in the data center world. While just one year ago almost everyone was using an Ethernet-based solution, with OOBM Switches and RS-232 Console Servers, more and more organizations are making the move toward PON. Research from Nokia shows that organizations using PON save 50 to 60% on costs compared to an Ethernet solution.

What is OOBM and why does it matter?

Every modern data center operates thousands of servers. To manage these, IT staff not only need access to the production network (where the data flows), but also a secure and separate management network. This is called Out-of-Band Management (OOBM). An Ethernet-based OOBM consists, for example, of various Aggregation Layer Routers/Switches with OOBM Switches and RS-232 Console Servers per rack underneath. See the image below.

PON-Based OOBM vs. Ethernet-based OOBM

More and more organizations are opting for a new approach: PON-based OOBM. The fundamental difference lies in the following aspects:
Ethernet-based OOBM PON-based OOBM
Active Switches in every rack Passive splitters (no power required)
Electrical copper cables Fiber optic cables
Many different components Less hardware, simpler design
High energy demand More than 50% less energy

Why more and more organizations are switching

🔸Cost reduction: Research from Nokia shows that an organization can save up to 60% on costs with PON-based OOBM by purchasing less hardware, using less space, and consuming less electricity.

🔸Speed and flexibility: Adding, moving, or replacing servers is faster. Technicians no longer need to physically visit each rack to adjust settings. Many configurations can be done remotely. All in all, this results in 80% fewer operational tasks.

🔸 Reliability: With fewer active components in the system (90% fewer switches), there are fewer points that can fail. Furthermore, the separation between the production network and the management network is more strictly defined.

How can I start with PON-based OOBM?

When you look at the facts, it is clear that PON-based OOBM brings lower costs, more efficient workflows, and greater flexibility for the future to data centers. Within the Benelux, Alcadis is the only provider of PON solutions from Nokia, including their own PON-based OOBM coming soon. Are you interested in PON-based OOBM? Then fortunately, you are in the right place.
